Kodak - properly known as Kodak Eastman - was founded in America in 1888 and dominated the "Western" world of photography for the next 100 years, constantly in fierce rivalry with the Japanese Fuji. Similarly to Fuji the advent of digital photography at the turn of the century caused significant financial problems. A late attempt to win in the compact market was hit by the rise of mobile photography and bankruptcy followed in 2012. Fortunately the photography business has survived under the Kodak Alaris name - based in Hertfordshire, England - and they have delighted the analogue industry by pledging continued support for film production and the promise of bringing back old favourite emulsions.

A vibrant film stock

I've created some of my favourite images on ektar 100 but I don't enjoy it as much as Kodak Gold.
Ektar drinks sunlight so definately one for when the lighting is spot on - I've never tried it in a studio, but then again it's not known for portraits!

Good in the right conditions

I made the mistake of loading this as the clouds came out. The film thrives in strong sunlight and that’s when you get the most of its vibrant colours. Sadly it doesn’t handle under exposure well at all as you will find a green hue on a lot of your pictures. Excellent film but rather niche if you live somewhere where there’s not strong sunlight most of the day.

Low Grain Juicy Colours

When you want some juicy colours Ektar 100 is a good film to start with. Generally great for all-around photography, however, portraits are the exception. Skin tones can come back with slightly weird/unrealistic tones (my ginger flatmate was positively pink with fluorescent ginger hair during golden hour).

Colourful

Beautiful bright colours. Perfect for sunny days. I always take one roll with me on summer holidays!
Can perform very well even on cloudy days. Beautiful low grain. One of my favourites
