The iconic Ilford emulsion, the slightly larger grain structure in the Ilford HP5 Plus 400 film will provide a wonderful vintage look to your photos. This 35mm black and white film is also very forgiving of wide exposure range, so you will get good results in a variety of difficult light and contrast situations.

Ilford was founded in 1879 in the English town of the same name. They are B&W royalty in the photography industry thanks to their 140-year heritage and their support for photographers with chemicals and development as well as film. In the mid-20th Century they produced several well-regarded camera lines (including one given to Princess Elizabeth that was later stolen!) but today they are focused on producing the best films and development processes that they can.

HP5 is a fantastically diverse and reliable film, offering beautiful grain structure and a subtle contrast which looks fantastic in it's own regard, whilst also providing the perfect basis for tweaking in post, or experimenting with different development techniques. The latitude of this film is the best I have found, preserving detail in both shadows and highlights and easily malleable to suit your creative intent and desired look. For those wanting to get into developing their own film, I would highly recommend HP5 as a starting point.
This is a fantastic beginner film, brilliant for those who want to immerse themselves in the world of black and white photography!
This is my 'go-to' film - it's what I have in whichever film camera I'm everyday carrying. It's great for street photography and portraiture, though can also be used for landscape. For standard dev. I use the stand method; if pushing I use 1:25 dilution.
Works brilliantly in low light and difficult conditions. Great contrast with no ultra black shadows. Have used for landscapes and portraits. Extremely reliable and always delivers.
I recently found my Dad's Canon AE-1 Program and I chose to use the HP5 as my first ever 35mm roll of film. It was heavily recommended to me and didn't disappoint. I'm looking forward to using the other rolls at different points in the year to see what results I can get!
