January can be a grey and depressing month in more ways than one, so when you get a clear sunny day, you make the most of it! Having a new film to test on one of your favourite walks is always exciting and the lovely people at the Film Photography Project continue to tempt us with intriguing emulsions. The Derev Pan 400 responded very well to the January sunshine and the fluffy white clouds drifting across the sky. Midtones and highlights were well defined with rich tonality and the blacks were satisfyingly black-I look forward to seeing what my precious hoard of Oriental Seagull will do to bring them out. Grain isn't as fine as modern emulsions such as Delta and TMax, but very reasonable and a developer like Atomal or Perceptol could be a very good match. All in all I thoroughly recommend this film. It's not the cheapest around, but it really delivered the goods. I look forward to seeing what the 100 and 200 can do!

I was looking forward to using this film. I like vibrant contrast and I was intrigued by the idea of very fine grain at ISO 400. I have to say that the results I obtained were less than good. I fully accept that this was almost certainly my fault not having used this before. I was shooting with a Nikon F4 through absolutely top class manual Nikkor lenses so the fault didn't lie there. Every shot needed adjusting in PSE to gain anything at all useable. One big mistake I did make was to shoot some of the film through a strong red filter! Strangely though, that gave me the only 2 photos I was really pleased with. I'll try again for sure but rethink my approach. I wouldn't rate this as an easy film to use.

Sharp photos, I love the range of tones which I think especially suit the bleak Norfolk landscape!
