What is 35mm film developing?

35mm film development is when we use chemistry and analogue magic 🪄 to turn your exposed 35mm film into negatives that can be scanned and used for printing your images.

If you order 35mm development you will only receive your physical negatives back. If you require digital images that can be viewed on your computer or phone then please select one of our scanning services in addition!

For full details of our lab services - including FAQs about postage, chemistry and more - please read here!

And let us know in the order notes if you would rather your 35mm film was cut into strips of 6 rather than the standard 4.

How do I know what type of film I have?

It will usually say on the 35mm film canister (or box if you still have it!)

You could also look up the film in our store by searching this page: All Film and checking its specifications.

The most common ones are colour C-41 which is the 'standard' colour negative film, and black and white (B&W).

If you have any concerns of questions about your 35mm film then just drop a line to our live chat - or email lab@analoguewonderland.co.uk - and we'll quickly help you to the right choice.

What are the scanning options?

We offer four resolution options:

Scan type Resolution File Size File Type Retouching*
Low Res 1500 x 1024 pixels <1MB JPEG Standard
Standard 3637 x 2433 pixels 1-2 MB JPEG Standard
Premium 5444 x 3648 pixels 4-5 MB JPEG Professional
Premium TIFF 5444 x 3648 pixels 50-60 MB TIFF Professional

Low Res --> Best for social media / photo albums!
Low Res scans are perfect for printing or displaying 6x4 inches - they will also work well on social media or website where you need to keep loading speeds fast.

Standard --> Best for personal websites / zines / projects!
Standard scans will be absolutely fine for posting on social media, personal websites, emailing to friends/family, and for making prints up to size A4

Premium --> Best for exhibits / large prints!
Premium scans are bigger and can also be used for posting on websites that can accept larger files (and won't simply compress that back down like Instagram or Facebook) - and they can make prints up to size A3

Premium TIFF --> Best for home editors and professional display!
Premium TIFF scans are much bigger file sizes, so prepare for a longer download time and more computer memory needed! The bonus of this is that they contain much more information within the same number of pixels as the Premium JPEG scans, so you can edit them yourself (in Photoshop or similar) and get much better results with strong edits.

TIFF is a 'lossless' format, so hasn't had any compression applied by software before arriving in your inbox. It also means that even though the pixel resolution is the same as the Premium scan, you should be able to print slightly larger without loss of meaningful detail - up to size A2.

*All of your images will get Standard retouching and fixing (rotation, file naming, basic dust removal). Colour films will also go through the ICE process that automatically removes many scratches and objects on the surface of the emulsion. Please note that this may still leave some artefacts on your image that are an integral part of the analogue look!

However if you order Premium JPEG or TIFF then our team will invest extra time to deliver a Professional retouching service: eliminating every speck of dust and artefact from each frame so they are ready to be printed/edited at a professional level. This will give you the CLEANEST POSSIBLE SCANS!

What are sprockets?

Sprocket scanning is when the film is scanned with the perforations or sprocket holes to be part of the image. We offer this service at an additional cost and it will add up to 2 days to your film turnaround time as it is a very manual process.

Good developing and scans

I've used the Wonderlab on a couple of occasions now. The developing is always first rate, and the basic scans are good and much larger than "basic" scans from other labs. The price is also quite competitive, and they give you a good idea of the turn-around times. My only minor niggle is that compared to the lab I have been using for many years is the turn-around time is slower than I am used to. I'll use the Wonderlab again, especially for the whackier films from the Woonderbox, and when I need bigger scans than I usually get.

Wonderful

Developed a few rolls of Kodak Gold 200 and I love how the photos came out so much!! The service was very easy and fairly quick, and I love knowing that my film is being looked after. Overall perfect!

Old is new.

What a good way to get back into analogue photography. This is the first roll of film (Ilford HP4 400) through my Fuji STX1 after replacing the light seals. Not used it for over 20 years so there was a fair bit of anticipation for the scans. The service from Analogue Wonderland is excellent with plenty of updates on the development time line. Going to order more film as the light seal repair has worked a treat.

Great results

As with all other aspects of Analogue Wonderland, the film processing service cannot be faulted! Great communication, decent turn around of scans. I sent in an expired Kodakcolor film and a roll of Rollei Retro 80S B&W film and got great scans from both.
