Ilford was founded in 1879 in the English town of the same name. They are B&W royalty in the photography industry thanks to their 140-year heritage and their support for photographers with chemicals and development as well as film. In the mid-20th Century they produced several well-regarded camera lines (including one given to Princess Elizabeth that was later stolen!) but today they are focused on producing the best films and development processes that they can.

My Summer B&W Film

During the summer there is at least one film back loaded with Ilford FP4 Plus in my Bronica SQ-A setup. I develop it in Ilfotec HC, which is quick, economic and easy. There’s plenty of latitude, so I rarely bother with a light meter.

Good contrast

Good contrast and very low grain, especially in Perceptol, Ilfosol 3 and similar. This (rather dodgy) phone scan is of FP4 in Ilfotec DD-X, which is great but pricey. I'll use Perceptol or similar next time!

My Go To B&W Film

I love this film, I always develop in Ilfotec DD-X as per instructions and get great results. A lower iso makes it ideal for outdoor shooting and the fine grain puts it above HP5 for me while still having the flexibility that the delta films lack.

My reliable go to film stock

I’ve used FP4+ for years. Always developed in Ilford Ilfotec DD-X. The results are so consistent and reliable. I expose the film at 100 ISO (rather than the rated 125) and develop at the recommended time and temperature. For me I love this combination.
I print with a VC LED head (from Juergen Heiland in Germany) on fibre paper which produces a great range of tones and contrast.
