Ektar 100 Tested on the North Wales Coastline

To the surprise of nobody (I am sure), this film thrives in bright daylight.

As well as in urban environments I tested a roll on the Welsh coast, sometimes shooting directly into a setting sun, and was able to recover lots of sky detail from the highlights.

Overall tonality in tandem with the fine grain is very even and primary colours really want to pop forwards... especially reds.

I can see how some people would enjoy the detail rendering and saturated colours of this Ektar 100 in a quite abstract use, as well as for contrived portraits with deliberate lighting.

Great for sunny days - what a contrast!

This film certainly lives up to its name of having super fine grain. It looks stunning on bright sunny days with a lovely contrast between the shadows and highlights. More contrasty than other film stocks such as Kodak Gold, but the colours are beautiful.

Be deliberate when choosing it

Very saturated colours, for a certain ‘look’. Personally i prefer Kodak Gold now that’s available in 120. I’d use this for landscapes at golden or blue hour. I found getting the colours right when scanning (even using NLP) can be tricky. All that said, i have had some good results with it, even portraits on occasion - though i definitely would not choose this for portraits deliberately.

Great for sunny days

Great for bright sunny day landscapes where you can take advantage of the film's super fine grain using fast lens settings (see windy wheat field pic attached) but still achieving an impressive depth-of-field.

Ektar Magic

Ektar was a real game changer when it first appeared in the late 80s-there was even a 1000 speed version! It set new standards in terms of grain, sharpness and colour and all I can say is, try some now! It's a revelation, especially on dull days, if you're looking to add some pep to your images. I find it particularly good for more abstract images, where you can really make the extra detail from medium format count.
