Very fine grain

I bought a selection of about 6 different films to try out and see which ones I liked. This was one of my favourites, having by far the finest/smoothest grain. It also handles light/shadow and colour in a way that is very natural but never boring. The only downside is the price really but I did really like the look of the photos that were taken with this.

Cinestill 50D

First time using Cinestill 50D, very happy with the result. The colours are stunning and the film worked well in low diffused light. Even though I love Cinestill films, I have occasionally been disappointed with the results in the past. However, I would happily try this one again. Highly recommend.

Love/Hate Film

I must admit that I have a love/hate relationship with this film. I do love the sharpness and the very fine grain, and I really enjoyed the colours that I got from this emulsion. But, for 10 shots, it is on the pricey side, and the 50 ISO speed is restrictive if the weather isn't on your side...as is often the case here in the UK. A 400 speed film is going to be much more versatile and useful.

Having said that, I have only shot a couple of rolls so far, and I will be shooting more as I do love the results. This film won't replace my go to 400 speed colour films, but it's a great one to have a couple of rolls on hand for when the conditions are right.

A great film, bright and sharp

This film can be outstanding, but make sure that you have tons of bright sunlight and a scene packed with highlights if you want to get the most from it. You get a really nice subtle red hue around the highlights which piles on the cinematic look you are probably after if you using this film.

A bit underwhelming

Having only this year made my jump into shooting film, I have been very excited to shoot with a whole range of film stocks. Cinestill 50D was high up that list and whilst it certainly isn’t bad, I definitely wasn’t blown away by it.

Considering it’s price and other options that are available for cheaper, I think you have to have a very specific reason to pick this stock. I just found it very ‘ok’. Nothing I can really complain about, but nothing overtly good about it either.

From seeing other reviews it’s entirely probable that I just don’t have the experience to get the most from it.
