Bought this as a cheaper alternative to portra 400 following a couple of recommendations and was pleasantly surprised. Though it doesn’t handle over-exposure quiet as well as portra does, I thoroughly enjoyed the results.
The colours are great, there’s plenty of detail and there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of backing paper issues.
Would definitely reccomend.
This is believed to be strongly related to the Kodacolor 400 of the late 1990s. As such it has a less "modern" look than some films. The colours are quite neutral, it won't make a dull day look bright or a sunny day pop out at you. But it will render scenes quite accurately. I haven't had any backing paper issues but this film does tend to fog a little right at the edges - in the rebate area not affecting the frame. This could be due to the backing paper not being quite as wide as that you find on Kodak, Fuji and other brands? Not a problem if you keep your exposed rolls in the dark.
Like other older formulae, this isn't as forgiving of under-exposure as some modern films but it's fine at box speed. Over expose 1/3 stop and you're probably safer. Good, solid medium/high speed colour negative films. Prints and scans well.
Took a roll of this out in my Lubitel 166B to see the first sunrise of 2021.
The light was changing pretty fast - from pre-dawn glow to an hour or so after sunrise - but the Lomo 400 was happy enough coping with it, and my fairly lax metering. I was running 4 cameras and the Lubi was a bit of an afterthought, think I only took 2 light readings over the whole 90 minutes or so, guessing the changes in between.
There were a few colour shifts in the results but nothing unpleasant, and they may well have just been more accurate representations of the changing light than my poorly calibrated eyeballs!
The 400 speed was ideal for the conditions, allowing nearly full choice of shutter speeds and apertures hand-held across the Lubi's fairly limited range. Nice level of grain and detail is about as good as the old Microtek is capable of.
At the price, this is an ideal stock for beginning medium format and deserves consideration as a regular in any camera bag.
Processed in Cinestill C41 @ 39 degrees, scanned at 2400DPI on a Microtek i800 with Vuescan with auto levels set, no corrections in post.
Picked this up as a cheaper alternative to Portra to try out after reading all the other reviews. Well I'll be joining them in recommending this as a great all-rounder colour negative film stock.
I think skin tones look good, landscapes and scenary have a warm, and bright colours. Sometimes I find Portra too washed out and Lomo 400 is more vivid (although not to the extent of something like Velvia), and is a good balance.
This might just be my go-to ISO 400 colour film for 120.
After hopefully learning from my mistakes first time with this film, I was much more careful to ensure that the tension on the take-up spool was good. I was blown away by the colours, which worked particularly well during the sunny autumn days, but equally peformed in shady lower light.
I have to say I have not been disappointed with this film, and I would consider it again in the future.
