Kodak - properly known as Kodak Eastman - was founded in America in 1888 and dominated the "Western" world of photography for the next 100 years, constantly in fierce rivalry with the Japanese Fuji. Similarly to Fuji the advent of digital photography at the turn of the century caused significant financial problems. A late attempt to win in the compact market was hit by the rise of mobile photography and bankruptcy followed in 2012. Fortunately the photography business has survived under the Kodak Alaris name - based in Hertfordshire, England - and they have delighted the analogue industry by pledging continued support for film production and the promise of bringing back old favourite emulsions.

Sharp and Vibrant

Everyone should try and shoot slide film at least once. Though not as forgiving as colour-negative film, the results you get with ektarchrome are spectacular when you nail the exposure with punchy colours and superb resolution perfect for displaying on a slide projector and digital scanning. Great for sunny holidays but avoid strong contrasts between highlights and shadows. Slide film is more expensive to buy and develop, so be more thoughtful of what you photograph.

Modern, Cold, Magenta Tones

This one was disappointing to be honest, as I had hoped for some lovely saturated old-school colours, but this new Ektachrome emulsion is not for a vintage look. It is very modern in how it renders colour, and is a bit more temperamental to get the exposure right in order to get shadow details.

Very cold look, stick to Portra (or Provia if you can get some!)

I bought this roll as other slide films are increasingly hard to get my hands on. I had read the reviews about this film having a cold look but I was shocked when I scanned the negatives. There is nothing wrong with a cold look, but thats not how I want to document spring/summer which this ISO is best suited for. Given the price of slide film and the cool tones this film is suited for, I can't see myself buying this film stock again.

Nothing else like Ektachrome, great quality

I have used Ektachrome in the past and the results have never amazed me. But I recently used one roll on my trip to Rio De Janeiro and I was really impressed with the colours and the unique look that only slide film can give you. I was so impressed that I wish I had used it more. It is a different look to negative film. It looks like old school movie film. I had also shot Fuji Provia which didn’t impress me, because it was so easy to blow the highlights, but on Ektachrome all my shots were perfect, so I assume that the exposure latitude is better on Ektachome. This is definitely the best slide film out there, if not the only slide film out there these days. I would definitely use it more if it wasn’t so expensive, but it’s good to use for special moments.
