I knew this film would have a distinctive 'look' but when I first got my pictures back I was a little underwhelmed as it felt a little bland. Then I had a second and saw the character within, especially in more detail shots. This isn't a film for landscapes but get up close and then it delivers.
I love NC500 very much. I like the colours it produces. Out of all the film stocks out there, the greens especially of plants and woods look clean and soothing on this film. It produces best results when shot at 400 iso. It’s so different to all the film stocks out there. I am so much in love with its grain structure, brings back the memories and nostalgia of the film stocks of 80s and 90s.
I was interested to try this film and was expecting something a little bit special, however I was not blown away by the results. There is a lot of grain and a look that I can only really describe as everything was brown.
It certainly accentuated the grey and wildness on an overcast day at the beach, but on a sunnier day the results weren't great, so I probably won't be shooting this on holiday.
Having said that I did get some good shots at sunset with a very moody sky so not all bad.
A really interesting film altough trickier than other emulsions. I really made it quite unfair for the film by shooting it using sunny 16 in a rangefinder witout a lightmeter (so no fallback to check my estimates) on mostly on an overcast day. It seems to handle overexposure much better than underexposure and there may be some merit to trying it at ISO 200.
The grain is pronounced but if exposure is adequate it adds character rather than being a nuisance.
Overall my photos had a sort of dreamy old look.
Orwo will be a familiar name to anyone who was around in the 70s and 80s. I remember Jessops used to stock it (anybody else remember Jessops?) and it was the thing to load your Zenith or Praktika with. The NC500 reminded me of 1980s Agfacolour-it had a real New Romantic band shoot in Berlin vibe. Not the cheapest film, but promising. It offers something a little different from many current films and if you appreciate this, then pop some in your bag.
