Adox HR-50 is a relatively new film from Adox and adapted from technical high-resolution film specially for regular use.
Set to 50 ISO this film will produce ultra-fine grain and moderate contrast - and has been designed with travel photography and cityscapes in mind.
Sensitive across the full range of visible spectrum, Adox HR-50 is a great film for experimenting with the use of different filters (including infrared!)
Adox is one of the oldest photographic brands in the world, established in Germany in 1860 by Dr. Carl Schleussner - who worked on early wet-collodion plates and X-ray plates. The company started marketing their own cameras in the early 20th Century, and introduced a line of B&W films in 1952 that became renowned for their sharpness of resolution.
A difficult end to the last century saw the brand change hands multiple times - and now Adox films are produced by Fotoimpex across manufacturing plants in Germany and Switzerland. Their products remain very high quality with a focus on emulsions that resolve incredible levels of detail and contrast.

Slightly hit and miss for me
4 stars because when this hit it really was a BIG hit, with lovely detail, sharpness and nice contrast. But I had some shots where it just didn’t seem to perform - I guess with some more rolls I could work out more of the reasons for the hit and miss, but to be honest, I got as nice results (on the good side) from an Ilford 50, which I can develop with Ilfosol 3 (I did get some Ilfotec DDX to develop this, as Adox seems to be a bit fussy about what can be used, and I didn’t want to waste the roll!).

Vintage film, retro camera
I wanted to use a b&w film for all round use in my La Sardina camera
Whilst the indoor shots were a bust, the outdoor images were ,uch, much better.
Film was developed by Analogue Wonderland; negatives were scanned at home using the Lomography DigitaLIZA and my Samsung S22 Ultra phone

Super sharp and great for IR photography
This film has great tonal range, insane sharpness and the bonus of Near IR sensitivity to add some fun when shooting with orange, red or R72 filters. ISO 50 does make it harder than other stocks for handheld but definitely workable on even a cloudy day.

Adox HR-50... please can I have more?
I suspected this film would be good and it didn't disappoint. If you want hard hitting contrast, search for another film. I found contrast is modest and the upside of that was good detail in shadows, whilst generally not losing the highlights. On flat grey days, it will reproduce the conditions you saw, but obviously at box speed of 50, a bit of sunlight helps the shooting.
I developed it in Adox's Atomal 49 and I like the results. Grain is very fine. I do want to try it in a different developer though for comparison.
Given the contrast and grain; next time I would want to shoot some ornate buildings. This film is going to shine with detailed scenes. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. In fact I checked Adox's web site to see if they also produce it in 120 or 5x4. They do mention this, though I haven't found evidence of any on sale. My TLR would love this film.
