Don't take your photography too seriously.

A disposable camera reminds me that photography is fun... and that I shouldn't take my photographs too seriously.

Yes, film is very grainy, the lens is fixed, the veiwfinder is a piece of plastic, and its not super high contrast. It's immediate, and it's not pretentious. You can still get some great shots with it that have lots of character.

When I remember to, I've taken one with me when I'm installing group exhibitions, and it's great to document things in a fun and non-pretentious way. More recently, I've sometimes had one around while I shoot a roll of B/W film. It allows me a different way of seeing, and a new perspective.

Using a disposable is kind of a treat for me.

Pricey, but fun

The days of good sub-£10 disposable cameras are seemingly gone, but the fun remains. If anything, the enjoyment of using these cameras is more obvious now than in the past, given how modern technology has changed our approach to taking photographs. Sometimes mindlessly.

Yes, you could be on holiday and have no idea how the photo will turn out. The 800 speed film is grainy and low contrast. The lens is fixed wide and not exactly stellar. The viewfinder is like a Fisher Price toy.

But there is something incredibly nostalgic and authentic about seeing your holiday from an entirely different perspective. The characteristics of the film shift the mood, and there is simply no way of deleting or machine-gunning exposures. Nothing can replicate the feeling of waiting days to see your photographs turn out better or worse than you expected, but in all positive ways.

So whilst the expense of the camera plus processing does put me off from using it more often than I would like to, it's an oddly nice treat for different occasions. Just keep your expectations in check!
