The Film Developing Starter Kit

This was my first time developing film. No instructions were included but was easy to find instructions on the internet and after testing loading a reel with a spoilt 35mm roll out in the open then once again in a changing bag (I would advise doing this as it is pretty tricky at first until you get the hang of it). I was able to develop my first roll successfully. I'm still amazed when I process a roll and there are images on the film.

Using this kit is a great way to save money, however like another reviewer mentioned the kit is poor value for money. All you really need from this kit is the Paterson tank with reels, clips, a thermometer and film squegee. If you purchase these items separately and add in the cost of chemical storage bottles and a measuring jug you can still save money. However I appreciate it is easier just to get everything at once. Also my thermometer shattered after a couple of uses which added in an additional cost to me developing film at home.

Really happy with this kit as a means to get started. You could also buy a starter kit with some one use chemicals, but after a little research I opted to buy these separately (Flic Film Black, White and Green, Ilford fixer, and a wetting agent, Adoflo) so I could develop more film.

Bought this starter kit for my first time developing B&W film at home. Good value for money. Paired this with the Cinestill DF96 monobath and gave really good results.

This kit has been a great starting point in developing my own film at home. It has all of the necessary tools and equipment, apart from the chemicals.

So glad I bought this to start my home developing. Everything I needed apart from the chemicals side of things, but great quality. I have since added to this kit a couple of 600ml graduates to help my way of doing things but basically this is all you will need.

Fantastic bundle to start out with film processing. The Paterson tank is tried and tested and the measuring cylinders are super convenient.

Despite being a photographer for over 40 years, I had never tried developing at home. With kits like this available I really didn't have an excuse and took the plunge. Having not developed for 10 years and this being the first time owning my own kit I wanted to get it right (and was very happy when it worked well!), and this supplies everything you need minus the chemicals and storage bottles (which I think are best to look around and choose whats right for you anyway), arrives in a good sized box which I have continued to keep the equipment in after using. Everything you need without any wasteful extras.

With this, a changing bag and a few chemicals, I now have all I need to set up at home. My local lab has always been great but I wanted more control of the development and can now play around with the proccess to my hearts content. Saving money on developping also means I now have more to spend on film!

This box has pretty much everything required to develop B&W film at home. The equipment feels well put together and made to last, the tank fits up to two 35mm rolls and doesn't leak, and the thermometer is easy to read. Since purchasing, I have successfully developed numerous rolls of B&W film using this kit.

I bought a film cannister opener (glorified bottle opener), and some chemicals separately.

Occasionally film will snag & pop off of the plastic reel when loading - most often towards the end of the roll as the tension increases. I've found this can be mitigated by guiding the film with my thumbs into the cassette while using very slow cranking movements.

The kit contains all the basics for home film processing in a darkroom except the chemicals. I also purchased a dark bag as I don't have a proper darkroom.

Does exactly what it says. All I needed was chemicals - apparently there's a lot of choice!
As a beginner at this I chose a intro pack from Ilford.
The developing kit had all I needed except a dark space to load my film. I made a bag from old heavy canvas and a rug! It worked.
If your just starting out this has more than you need, as you could replace the measuring tubes with other things, your just measuring quantities. The thermometer is great, small scale so easy to get it bang on!
Best part is, I could actually develop my own negatives at home, nervous at first but actually really straight forward.
Now I need to get a good method of scanning them.

I've never developed film at home before so this was a new area to me. I purchased this kit as it seemed to fit the bill and so far i'm quite pleased.
It's simple to use, everything works well, and it's many many times cheaper to develop yourself so the kit pays for itself fairly quickly.
If I can pick on anything I would say that the lid to the developing tank was a little stiff at first but everything became more snug after a couple of uses and fits perfectly.
Everything you need except the chemicals is included with no unnecessary extras, and all parts fulfill their purpose just fine. I'm quite happy with my purchase.

Don't get me wrong - what's inside the box are brand-new Paterson, high quality products. But it's extremely poor value to purchase this kit - you don't need most of what's in there.

You can buy the same exact paterson tank with two reels for around £22.
You don't need 2 x 600 ml beakers and a 100 ml beaker. All you need is a 1 litre measured pitcher (£5) and a 50ml plastic syringe (£3).

The thing is the kit doesn't include or take into account you'll need chemical storage bottles once mixing solution - all you need are 2 500ml or 1L HDPE plastic bottles (literally £1 each) to store your diluted fixer & stopper on the side ready to go after you use a pitcher to mix your developer.

If you don't already have a thermometer, you can get an extremely accurate aquarium digital one for £3.

Film clips? Score them on eBay for £2.

The only thing that adds some value to this kit is the squeegee - which for some bonkers reason costs £15 almost anywhere to buy brand new.

Excluding the squeegee you can buy everything above you need to develop B&W film in the £40 range at most, if you pick up a used squeegee for under a tenner.

This kit contains almost everything you need to start developing film at home, I really enjoyed it now so I'm glad I got this kit and glad gave it a go.

This was a really useful kit to order for my developing first time. Took the stress out of making sure I had everything.

Literally the first thing any person needs when they have started looking into home developing. With the ability to develop up to 2 rolls of 35, 1 roll of 120 or 1 roll of 127 its everything a beginner or even professional should need.
