As a company Rollei is most famous for it's cameras - particularly the iconic twin-lens Rolleiflex - but this German-based company founded in 1920 has also had a long history of making B&W films. Unfortunately the parent company didn't survive the digital revolution of the 90s/00s but the brand survives today under licence to AgfaPhoto - who continue to support emulsions old and new.

This film is fun! It has a really strong contrast to it, gives that really moody dark feel. It was quite flexible, I over exposed a few shots and it seemed to handle the highlights pretty well!
I shot a roll of Rollei Retro 400S on a recent visit to the Lancashire Mining Museum. It was a bright and sunny summer afternoon and I am very happy with how my shots turned out. The range of tones is rather expansive across the frame and I will be using it again.

A VERY Happy Birthday to me..!
I shot my latest roll of this wonderful film while visiting the East Lancashire Railway on my birthday last weekend, and boy did it give me a birthday treat.
I shot the film with my recently acquired Adox Golf 63 6x6 folding camera and developed it in HC110 (B) . Let the results speak for themselves....

So versatile!!
This film is fantastic!
It has never let me down no matter what I've asked of it....as long as I do my part, Rollei Retro 400s has always delivered.
My preferred development is 22 mins in Rodinal 1+50 at 21°C.

Nice and contrasty, good value
I ordered a roll of this in 120 as other reviews/info suggested it would offer strong contrast with a little bit of sensitivity into the IR range.
I took it to my local forest where the late afternoon sun was casting some nice areas of light and shadow, to really give it a test.
I developed it in Rodinal using the timings for 1+25 (I was too lazy to dedicate the 20-plus minutes to my usual 1+50) and this probably made the negatives even more contrasty.
Overall I really like the results - where the sun shins into the frame in one image there's almost a halation type effect around the tree-trunks.
Although the images are high in contrast, I found that I could edit this out of the scan to give a more natural result if needed.
I'll probably be trying this one again.
