As a company Rollei is most famous for it's cameras - particularly the iconic twin-lens Rolleiflex - but this German-based company founded in 1920 has also had a long history of making B&W films. Unfortunately the parent company didn't survive the digital revolution of the 90s/00s but the brand survives today under licence to AgfaPhoto - who continue to support emulsions old and new.
For more information about the brand check out our bio of Rollei

If you think you don't like B&W try this
Black and White film photography can be an acquired taste. It doesn't have the clean sharpness and resolution of digital B&W. Grain, contrast, lack of detail...it is easy to give up on it as it can seem inferior to shooting colour. And yet others have clearly got some great shots from HP5 and Tri-X etc. I have sampled a lot of different B&W film stocks and while that has been fun to do, if I want reliable results I use RPX400. It looks great straight out of camera. It has incredible resolution for capturing detail. It is easy to add a little more contrast without getting grainy results. Much of the time it appears almost grainless. It is 400 iso but looks like 100 iso film. It is particularly good for street, architecture and interiors I have found. It is my go-to B&W film. If you have tried B&W but not liked the results, I recommend you trying this film.

Rollei on a roll up the marshes
I sometimes go back to a familiar place to see if I can get something new or a different look to it.
I must have shot the marsh stumps on at least 10 different films by now, but never Rollei 400. In fact I've never used it much at all.
I'd bought a couple of rolls after it delivered fantastic results three years ago (scroll back through reviews until you find the train...).
But they'd sat in the stash forgotten until I started running low on my usual go-tos.
So I gave it a spin up the marshes and, well - if it's not a film that's screaming "use me more" then I'm a kipper.
Fantastic tone and contrast, although there might have been an orange filter on the end.
I also shot a few frames of Tri-X (final image, wompare with the one before...) and I reckon Rollei rolled all over it, which isn't bad going for an £8.50 film.

Outstanding
Great for fine detail and excellent contrast. Does a great job in full sun and in subdued interiors. Flexible and reliable. This is definitely one of my favourite B&W film stocks. I can see this becoming my go-to film for B&W shooting.
