Excellent value
With a few charity shop cameras to try, I wanted some inexpensive film to put through them. I am so impressed with the results that not only will I use the cameras again, but I think Kentmere will be on my "to buy" list again.
The dynamic range is quite bad, and it doesn't respond well to underexposure based on the 3 rolls I've shot of it while getting to grips with my first film camera (Olympus OM4). However due to the cheaper price it didn't feel too bad when I messed up my photos as a beginner to analogue. Attaching some unedited JPG scans from the AW lab.

Grainy but glorious
Kentmere 400 is not premium film, the price makes that clear. It’s not mega sharp, but it’s sharp enough. That said, it pushes nicely to 800 (as pictured) without the grain becoming unpleasant. The contrast is a lovely middle - enough to capture detail and still have room for editing. And the price? What a bargain. I don’t think I can say it will be my go to B&W film, but I can say it’s as high value as anything on the market and I feel as confident shooting with it as with anything else.
I took a roll of this film with me on a recent trip to Eryri to ascend Yr Wyddfa. Although the weather conditions at the summit were not suitable for taking photos, for the walk up to the Halfway House cafe, the weather was perfect. Sunny skies.
I loaded the film into my Olympus Trip 35 and shot the roll on 'Auto'.
The sample shots show the 'graininess' of this film which is ok for the subject matter - the rugged mountains and the rugged footpath.
I may use this film again, but probably loaded into one of my SLRs and try it with a variety of lenses.
