Ilford was founded in 1879 in the English town of the same name. They are B&W royalty in the photography industry thanks to their 140-year heritage and their support for photographers with chemicals and development as well as film. In the mid-20th Century they produced several well-regarded camera lines (including one given to Princess Elizabeth that was later stolen!) but today they are focused on producing the best films and development processes that they can.

I might be a simple chap at heart but I've always been a fan of Neo-Palladian country piles, of which the Grade I listed Houghton Hall near King's Lynn up Norfolk is one of the finest examples.
Lob in an installation of works by the sculptor Lynn Chadwick (1914 - 2003) and what's not to like.
Especially when you do it up with FP4 pushed a stop (ish…) to 200. It gives you just that bit more contrast without getting much more noisy, which really suits this kind of, um, architecture meets art kind of stuff.
Or is that the other way round..?
But moving swiftly onwards, just get them tones. The 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley's immaculate lawn is green (obvs...), the house with its bel étage is kind of house-coloured and the seated figures are made from stainless steel, so they're a bit on the shiny side.
Quite a bit to cope with there then, FP4. But the film just smashed it.
I metered off the figures and the green stuff. I can't remember what it said now but I went for in between the two on a 24mm.
Getting the angles straight and one step more to the right might have been a bonus.
Great, great film all the same, with top-notch processing that brings the best out of it.

FP still 4 me
FP4's a regular for me, usually pushed to 200 to give it a bit more contrast without the grain running away on you.
It's also got some latitude, so you don't have to have read any Ansell Adams books - let alone understood them - to use it.
It's just a lovely, consistent film.

Great in Xtol
FP4, although apparently not as sharp as Delta 100, actually presents great sharpness in rodinal and Xtol 1+1. The tonality is great.
I've used FP4 on and off over the past 20 years but never stuck with it. I decided to make the decision and shoot at least 4 rolls in a row to get more of an idea how it sits with me.
It depends... sometimes, fine, other times blown out. But when you get it right.... it's great.

All round great film
Always a joy shooting this film. I find you get the greys and reduced contract look that HP5 gives but with less grain. A hybrid of Delta 100 and HP5. I paired this film with a red filter for the first time and it performed just fine, not the best but not the worst. Overall a film that you cannot go wrong with and one that I'll always be s sure to have.
