Ilford was founded in 1879 in the English town of the same name. They are B&W royalty in the photography industry thanks to their 140-year heritage and their support for photographers with chemicals and development as well as film. In the mid-20th Century they produced several well-regarded camera lines (including one given to Princess Elizabeth that was later stolen!) but today they are focused on producing the best films and development processes that they can.

This was my first roll of Pan F and perhaps I should have heeded the warnings about contrast a bit better! The low ISO tempted me into taking it out in bright sun, but in some high contrast scenes I should have thought more carefully about where and how to meter to avoid losing detail in the highlights. Some came out more like pen & ink drawings, which is not necessarily a failure, of course. Where I did judge it better, the detail was fantastic for 35mm, and lovely deep blacks were certainly available. I'll try it again sometime but with more thought on what I'm trying to achieve.

Great film
Good contrast between black and white. Really good on a bright summers day as it produces high detail in photos and low grain.

Can be tricky but its great when fresh
I've heard even Ilford give warnings about the lifespan of this film; it goes off quickly after the expiry date. Even exposed, the image degrades faster than other films until you get it developed. When you adhere to these rules, it's one of the best films on the market. ISO50 is more than enough for sunny day photography. It allows wider apertures for good background separation with portraits etc.

One roll through a Nikon FE and I’m in love. The results have a lovely texture, with decent contrast that can be played with when scanning. Developed at home in a Paterson Tank with Ilfosol 3 at 1+14, and I can’t fault the results.
I was slightly worried by some reviews mentioning the absolute need for good light, but even in dull days I was shooting down to about 1/15th handheld and things were coming out sharp. Obviously a tripod would be even more secure.
I’ve got another roll ready to go, and really looking forward to it.
Developing time was amazingly short (just 4 and a half minutes); and dry for scanning in about two hours.
