Kodak - properly known as Kodak Eastman - was founded in America in 1888 and dominated the "Western" world of photography for the next 100 years, constantly in fierce rivalry with the Japanese Fuji. Similarly to Fuji the advent of digital photography at the turn of the century caused significant financial problems. A late attempt to win in the compact market was hit by the rise of mobile photography and bankruptcy followed in 2012. Fortunately the photography business has survived under the Kodak Alaris name - based in Hertfordshire, England - and they have delighted the analogue industry by pledging continued support for film production and the promise of bringing back old favourite emulsions.

The awkward middle child
Not quite Portra 160, not quite Gold 200 & not as punchy as Ektar 100. Meet Pro Image 100! Quite impressed with this film, it seems to sit in between all the emulsions mentioned above in terms of character. It doesn't lean quite as warm as gold but the colours aren't as pastel as Portra or saturated as Ektar, nicely in the middle. The grain isn't as fine as the other "pro" emulsions but still very nice. It handles shadows better than the consumer grades films. There are rumours and speculation that this handles more like a ISO 160 film. I did notice that on my FE2 that you could class some shots as 1/3-1/2 over exposed and that meter is usually spot on. Nothing wrong with that at all just something to be aware of. All round very good and nice to know that if you take it to the Carribean or Australia it won't get wrecked in the sun.

Tested in overcast weather
I tested a roll of this film when the weather was overcast, right before a storm rolled in. I didn't have any expectations as I'd never shot on Pro Image 100 before. I was pleasantly surprised at the contrast after development. Would use again and try in sunnier weather.

An Olympus 35 DC, some ProImage 100, and legs - not much more that I need in a wander around town with family.
The ProImage may not have the same lustre as something like Ektar, or the same rendering as Portra, but it's a great (and reliable) stock.
This was my first time using Pro Image 100, so I seized the opportunity when AW was selling expired rolls at a bargain. I shot it in late August & early September with my 28-105mm EF lens. Given the 100 ISO rating, I anticipated slow shutter speeds and needed a steady hand or tripod. I opted for both, as I often achieved shutter speeds of 1/60th of a second or less. I was thoroughly impressed with the results; the vibrant colours in my flower shots required minimal editing. Overall, it exceeded my expectations and I’ve even recommended it to a film friend for a holiday experiment.
