Description

Lucky Film has made its return to the market after years of absence, reintroducing their 35mm black-and-white film: SHD 400. This film features an ISO of 400, 36 exposures, and is compatible with standard black and white processing chemicals. Also available in 120 format.

Chinese film brand Reflx has also hinted that if Lucky Film performs well, they may reintroduce their discontinued colour film, "Lucky Super." Film fans - you know what to do 👀

Also known as LuckyPan SHD 400, this film offers a new (or nostalgic!) option for B&W photography enthusiasts.

About Lucky Film

The Lucky Film Corporation (formerly known as Baoding Cinefilm Manufacturing Factory) was founded in 1958 as part of the Chinese Government's plans to build 'in-house' manufacturing capacity for important products.

There were a major part of the film industry in the second half of the 20th century, and one of the most important Asia suppliers.

During the early 21st Century and the digital revolution, they formed a partnership with Kodak Eastman in an effort to further modernise their operations, but sadly this wasn't enough to keep them in the consumer market.

Their films were known for providing a neutral colour palette. Lucky Film produces a variety of industrial and x-ray films, as well as consumer emulsions.

Nice cheap contrasty film

Lucky 400 is good quality, but inexpensive film from China. I was a bit thrown by the colour of the thing, quite a strong blue, which presumably has an effect on the tonality. It came out looking sharp and contrasty. I was using an old Icarex with a 50mm Tessar from the 60s, good results all round. The sample shot is an unedited scan.

100 ISO or bust.

I shot this film at box speed, developed it as suggested by the Massive Dev chart as I can’t read Chinese, and was disappointed by the results. All the frames were at least 2 stops underexposed when put through Lightroom. So if you buy and use Lucky 400, shoot it at at least 100 ISO.

Really rich contrast

This film has a very clear base so produces strong crisp blacks rather than subtle midtones. Very fine grain.
