An underrated gem

Kentmere film has never been high on my agenda but I was recently gifted a roll and liked it so much I bought more. I’ve developed it in Euro HC(b) and also PyrocatHD and enjoyed the results very much. I sense it’s a film that benefits from the right developer and development time. These sample images were all made in a Rolleicord and developed in EuroHC. I’ve since used several more rolls and Kentmere 100 is now on my daily carry list.

Great Results and Great Value

I love both the image quality and the price of Kentmere 100 (in 120).

Good value for the price

This is a good film for the price, especially given that budgets are tight these days. I found the film itself a bit flimsy, so could be a bit tricky in the darkroom, but the images are good and it definitely does the job. It's no FP4, but when you're prioritising being able to photograph with a bit more freedom and you don't want to obsess over the cost, this is the B+W film to go for.

Brilliant value

Yes it's a cheap film but for the money you can't complain; it does exactly what it says on the tin! Other films are better but not twice the money better so for trying new techniques, trying out home development or just shooting without the burden of an expensive film this film is perfect!

Perfectly capable

I have to confess to generally having used Kentmere 100 for testing cameras I don't especially want to keep. This time around I shot a roll in my beloved Mamiya C220. Not sure why I haven't been using more Kentmere. Given the price, it delivers very well. In a coupe of frames, I pushed my luck with late or early sunlight creating a huge range in some scenes. Kentmere 100 handled this better than I expected, with the main lesson being... get a lens hood for the Mamiya 80mm lens.

In processing, the film works just fine with Massive Dev Chart's timings for Xtol. There is some contrast, though I do like some blackness in the shadows and it doesn't quite deliver on this. The result is a little more shadow detail than I wanted for a couple of shots, but that could be altered at scanning stage. I'll try a different developer next time and see what changes occur.

Sharpness seems good and on 120 roll, it could certainly produce something good enough to print at a reasonable size and hang on the wall.

At the price point, as a general purpose 100 ISO, I think it is excellent, in fact at this price it's a shame it doesn't come in 5x4. I'll happily use more.
