First Roll of Harman Phoenix 200: Impressions and Workflow

I shot my first roll of Harman Phoenix 200 on a Canon EOS 30 with a 40mm lens and scanned using a Fuji X-T4. The film delivers bold contrast, prominent grain, and punchy colours—particularly blues and reds. It’s not subtle, but has real character. Great for experimental or textured scenes. Definitely worth trying if you’re after something with a bit of edge and energy.

Strange Film

Used this roll of Harman Phoenix during a couple of practical evenings at my camera club - the first time shooting a model, the second time some tabletop set ups. I've also used it outside during sunrise, and then over a couple of days, once in bright sunshine, the other in subdued lighting. In my opinion, I prefer the shots I took in subdued lighting - it was almost like I'd used a different film. My model shots looked very warm. The tones in my outdoor shots sometimes looked a little strange. Also there was more film grain than I expected, especially in deep blue skies. However, it was still good to experiment (I won the film in a Christmas raffle!), and although I didn't fully appreciate the results of some of my images, I still want to try Harman Red.

Great film

I’m pleased Harman have decided to create a colour film since there’s so few manufacturers out there! Obviously it’s not perfect, the film seems to lend itself to a lo-fi and/or artsy look rather than faithful replica of the real world, but that’s what I like about it. After hearing the box speed is overstated, I shot this at 100 ISO and I’m quite pleased with the results.

I’d recommend it as long as you know it’s basically a sort of prototype so it’s a little experimental at the moment and you might get unexpected colours and crunchiness. Maybe don’t use it for family holiday snaps but for art it’s great.

Contrasty, and fiddly

Having read reviews of this film I decided to shoot at 125 and was mostly happy with the results outdoors. Using a flash indoors doesn’t seem to be a great option. Might try again sometime now I know what to expect.
