Underwhelmed

I have only used this film once and I doubt that I’ll try it again.
Most of the other reviews describe the film as “versatile and fine grained”. They also rave about the contrast. I found the grain ugly and intrusive and the detail poor. I usually use xp2 or hp5. I much prefer the fine detail that you get with xp2 and find that hp5 has far more pleasing grain. The contrast was ok and I could see it working well for outdoor portraits where you wanted a bit of grit in the image.
I used this film over the winter in a compact camera (Pentax espio 120sw) that has a slight tendency to underexpose. Nevertheless, I expected way better results. It seems a rather unforgiving emulsion to me. The film is significantly more expensive than either xp2 or Hp5 and, on my single use, I can’t say that the extra cost is justified.
Even the shots that worked had me wishing I’d put trusty hp5 in my camera.

Ilford 400, Industry standard B & W film!

Great all round film! I shot this low light with a flash and outside at late evening and got awesome results. If you want a great B & W film that is versatile this is perfect!

A great fast B&W film from Ilford

This B&W film from Ilford is one of my favs alongside FP5, each has their own lovely characteristics.
II shoot nature and wildlife and so it also pushes nicely by a stop without having distracting grain.

Also a very nice general purpose B&W film at a reasonable price, yes more expensive than Kentmere but if you are paying £15+ for lab work the difference in the price of Kentmere 400 and Ilford Delta 400 may not matter that much vs the more fine grain

Shots taken with Nikon F6 and Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6g VRII
