Given how much portra has gone up, gold has really replaced it for me in most circumstances. It’s a little more punchy than 160.

The Gold look in 120
I was surprised that Gold 120 is branded as Kodak Professional, that said this film is the same stuff as 35mm. The colours are great and give that Kodak Gold warmth, and being 120 the grain is imperceptible unless you zoom right in.

Reliably rewarding
A roll of Gold at 120 always seems to give back more than I have any right to expect at this price. A beautiful sunny morning was a good start, of course, but the results had just the right amount of warmth to testify to that without looking artificial. Most shadows still had some detail - though naturally there is a limit. At 120 it's wonderfully sharp too. If there's reasonable daylight, Gold always seems a sound choice, so I aim to make sure I always have some to hand.

It was the price that initially drew me to this impressive film. However, when I got the scans back from Analogue Wonderland, I was bowled over. The colours are lush and warm, which is great for the winter and autumn weather.
