Kodak - properly known as Kodak Eastman - was founded in America in 1888 and dominated the "Western" world of photography for the next 100 years, constantly in fierce rivalry with the Japanese Fuji. Similarly to Fuji the advent of digital photography at the turn of the century caused significant financial problems. A late attempt to win in the compact market was hit by the rise of mobile photography and bankruptcy followed in 2012. Fortunately the photography business has survived under the Kodak Alaris name - based in Hertfordshire, England - and they have delighted the analogue industry by pledging continued support for film production and the promise of bringing back old favourite emulsions.

The Benchmark

Being a relatively new member to the film world and being of an age where my cameras were all digital moving to film gave a whole new possibility. Choosing the film to use is a big choice to make, the cost and that you can't change it half way through you need to make the right choice.
This is why I will always recommend Portra 400, It has such incredible pasture colours and the dynamic range is huge, so if you mess up a bit (which does happen) you have a large about of leeway and still get the shot. I typically use it for landscapes but its suitable for portraits or generally anything you want.
It's a fantastic film and always 5*

My go-to

Go-to film for almost everything these days - great skin-tones, very forgiving and colours give such a lovely, warm feel, even on the cooler winter days.

Best all round colour negative?

Beautiful colour rendering, incredible exposure latitude, and detail in the shadows. I love Fujifilm stocks of a similar ISO, but it's hard to compete with a film stock such as Portra. I always try and have a roll in my bag, and it's a film you can rely on, to handle unpredictable conditions.
