Big Film Photowalk Competition: Winner! 🏆
By Paul McKay
Today we announced the winner and honourable mentions from the Big Film Photowalk Photo Competition! As a reminder, this competition was open to everyone who attended the Big Film Photowalk at the end of June. They received a free roll of Kodak Gold 35mm film on the day and a processing voucher with the Analogue Wonderland lab, and were able to submit their favourite photos from the day to a competition to win a brand new Pentax 17 camera 🤩

The judge: Antonio Pisani
We asked Antonio, one of the sales team from Pentax/RICOH to judge the competition. He attended the Big Film Photowalk in London and is an accomplished photographer in his own right. You can see some of his images on Instagram - @apisani_official - and he specialises in monochrome documentary photography.

So noble! 😅 Taken by Paul McKay on the Big Film Photowalk along London's South Bank
After reviewing the 1,200+ entries into the competition (!) Antonio produced a shortlist of 12 photos that we'll show here. 9 of them are honourable mentions - fantastic photos in no particular order - and then we'll cover the top 3.

We showed the full countdown and winners on an Instagram live. You can watch it - along with Antonio's commentary - on YouTube below!

The runners-up
The two runners-up were Rachel Brewster-Wright and Lucy Giles! Huge congratulations both, some Kodak film will be on its way to you shortly

Wide angle photo from Rachel - she also headed the Liverpool Big Film Photowalk!
Antonio loved the photo: "You see this athlete jumping the hurdles and it really does give a three dimensionality to the picture which is quite difficult to achieve. On top of that there is a really powerful message and it's powering positivity. There is someone working on this billboard and then there are all these nice messages on the bottom of it. Progress, not perfection, believe in yourself, never give up and so on, which is a powerful message within the message in the sense that powering positivity is a work in progress.
"And then you see the human. Someone fixing the painting. So I think it does really tell a strong story yet is very iconographic. It just give you a really strong message. And the proportion between the elements is really well nailed it. So yeah, really well done to Rachel."

Lucy's runner-up photo
Antonio said about this photo: "So Lucy Giles really nailed the shot. She used a simple concept, which is conceptual photography, which sounds easy. But when you start trying to give a message through your images in a subtle way - and trying to give these messages while you take the shot, that's really difficult.
"The bars out of focus gives a sense of separation and also gives you sense of depth, which is quite difficult to achieve when you're photographing a wall. So it does have a strong concept. Great photography and a strong message from Lucy Giles. Well done"
The winner 🥇
Hugh congratulations to Gregor Boyd for his winning entry!

Antonio described why this is his winner: "It's very good timing Gregor chose here. He really captured the moment. He froze the moment. And he captured the expression of the gentleman. He captured the fire on the floor near the wheel. Also, some betting institution and other shops, which shows really the core essence of the UK, where this is a classic scene. Making something ordinary extraordinary, he did it. I think it's quite difficult to find something like that. I hadn't seen anything like this in the 1,200 images. So well done to Gregor, well deserved first place in my view"
Congratulations Gregor! We will be in touch shortly to dispatch your Pentax 17 camera, along with a goodie bag of Kodak films 🎉

I agree with what Gerry said
Literally, any of the other photos were better but 🤷♂️
Wow..I would have taken literally any of the “honourable mentions” over this. Generally speaking the others are well composed, thoughtful and as good pictures do, “tell a story”. This pic in my opinion frankly is a random quick snap with minor story telling of a car which happened to be smoking.
We all have our favourites and the beauty of photography is that it means and says different things to different people. To be honest my choices would have been different with the market scene being my choice. This is very Alex Webb in style with multiple reactions all caught in perfect balance.
