Challenging and Experimental: Washi E

This is one of the most challenging films I’ve ever shot with—I can only describe it as ‘binary’ film, so either black or white, like photocopies, but with one addition - it can’t see green either. So I had no idea how to visualise the results— took it with me to Beachy Head in the south-east of England and was shocked at just how high contrast the results were. The results were nothing like I expected—grass is just black, and anything that has ‘green’ in it will be almost black. It was hard to know how to meter for this film, highlights blow out really quickly, and shadows are actually a little easier to recover, but not much. So you’ll have to accept and work with the hightlights blowing out. It’s definitely a film for a creative workout. If you like realism you’ll hate this film, but I can imagine this working very well for strong shapes and patterns, minimalist compositions and silhouettes. I’ll definitely be experimenting with other compositions with my next roll. I've given it 4 stars mainly because it's hard to use, and I feel it's quite a 'marmite' type of film.
