Reliable film with a timeless look

I always try to keep some Tri-X in stock, as it always just works. It costs a little more than HP-5 but I find I usually prefer the results by about the same difference. It can come out grainy, but it's a "nice grain" if that makes sense. I've occasionally pushed it to 800 without much difference in results, and I believe it can go much higher if needed.

Huge latitude and easy to work with

I shot my first roll of this the other day and I'm really happy with it. But of course its good stuff, its a classic film from Kodak. Some scenes had deep shadows and bright windows. It was able to capture really more than enough graduation in both so I had plenty to play with when editing. I used K-76 for 9.75 minutes . I was very happy with the look of the negatives. I'm keen to try this in 120 now.

This film has stood the test of time.

Loved by professionals and amateurs alike. Flexible, push or pull. Works well in most developers, for me, Rodinal does exactly what I want. Beautiful grain. Classic film look. Prints well, too.

Fab!

The more I use it, the more I like it. It's tonality is very nice and is quite easy to work with. Perhaps it needs a smidgen less development when shot in contrasty situations but nonetheless a great all-rounder.

It's gritty, contrasty, grainy

I love Tri-x for its character. It's grainy, contrasty and gives flavour to my photos in a way that I don't think Ilford films match. Also, you can push it a stop or tow which just brings out those characteristics more.

The quintessential Black and White film

I have used Tri-X for over 30 years and no other film stock compares. I had a long break in that time, as the cost spiralled out of my reach, and used HP5+ instead. Recently the price differential has levelled to a point where I thought, why not shoot Tri-X again. I was not disappointed and as I have plenty of prior experience with Kodak's best loved emulsion, it was just like coming home. Skin tones are where I notice it most. There is a subtlety that has to be seen to be believed. I definitely will be using Tri-X as my go to film for all my needs. I rate it at ei200 and develop in Ilfotec HC 1:49. It is my all time favorite film bar none.

The absolute best BNW for street photography!

It's slightly grainy, but in all the good ways, and still great latitude and for me, it's the best BNW for street photography!

Tri-Xceptional as usual

It might have a rich heritage for a reason. Don McCullin and all that.

Yet it still punches above its weight these days.

I should probably shoot more of this as it more than suits a lot of my bread and butter stuff up the Norfolk coast.

It just loves gritty, muddy landscapes.

Traditional and versatile

Initially, I didn't get on with Tri-X film at all, but I've realised that it is a very good film - it just needs a little practice!

Very impressed!

Classic legend of a film stock, so happy that it's survived all this time. Great contrast and grain, I probably should have pulled it a little but still very happy with the results as it's easy to fix and I'm still getting to grips myself.
