Ilford XP2 Super is a high-speed, fine-grained beauty of a 120 film - and most importantly it can be processed via the normal colour process which is offered as same-day development in many high-street shops! A useful chemical trick from Ilford that has wonderful benefits to the effective exposure latitude of the film
Ilford was founded in 1879 in the English town of the same name. They are B&W royalty in the photography industry thanks to their 140-year heritage and their support for photographers with chemicals and development as well as film. In the mid-20th Century they produced several well-regarded camera lines (including one given to Princess Elizabeth that was later stolen!) but today they are focused on producing the best films and development processes that they can.

XP2 is one of my favourite film when looking for creamy photos and reliable results
For me, there's absolutely nothing wrong with XP2 at all. The film is reasonably cheap and produced fantastic results throughout in 35mm and 120 format.
The film captures details very well and renders shadows nicely. Some shots are attached.

An excellent all rounder for trying folding cameras that have slow shutters and limited aperture options and the fact it can be developed in C41 is a nice bonus.

Best B&W for me.
As I use vintage cameras (Think 1920s and 30s box and bellows cameras) that do not have reliable shutter speeds and unknown apertures, the latitude of this film is extremely useful and it is rare that any frame is unusable due to exposure issues. I find that generally the contrast is good and yet the grain is fine. I have tried other B&W films but have now settled on XP2 Super 400 as my regular B&W film. The sample photo was taken on a 1923 Ensign 2 1/4 B box camera and has not been enhanced in any way.
