Big Film Photowalk Competition ‘25: Winners! 🏆

By Amy Farrer

As part of our second Big Film Photowalk event on 28th June 2025, we invited attendees to take part in an exclusive, free to enter competition celebrating their best shots from the day. This year, we introduced a special ticket option which included two free rolls of Kodak Pro Image 100 35mm film - also our Kodak Summer Competition film - encouraging the community to explore this underrated stock, many for the first time. With a Pentax 17 camera and Kodak films up for grabs, the stakes were high and the entries disappoint! Read on to discover the top three winning images and seven honourable mentions, hand-picked by Antonio Pisani from Pentax/RICOH.

Welcome Judge Antonio!

Once again, we had the pleasure of inviting Antonio Pisani, Area Sales Manager at Pentax/RICOH, as the judge for this year’s competition. Some of you may remember Antonio from the London Southbank Big Film Photowalk 2024, or from our Pentax 17 walk with TKO - the legendary designer of this brand-new half frame film camera. Beyond his role at Pentax/RICOH, Antonio is a passionate street photographer and also a brilliant walk leader, with a particular interest in black and white documentary photography. Check out his work on Instagram at @apisani_official.

This year, Antonio reviewed 200 entries before narrowing the field down to his top 10 images: seven honourable mentions who'll all receive a copy of their print from our in-house WonderLab, followed by the top three winners, each set to receive an exciting bundle of Pentax and Kodak prizes. While it wasn't quite as many entries as last year's 1,000+ images submitted on Kodak Gold, we hope that from spotlighting the lesser-known Kodak film, Pro Image, many of you will regard it as a worthy colour film going forward!

The Runners Up

Congratulations to runners up Warren Bates and Kristian Brice (who was both second place and an honourable mention!). We’ll be in touch to confirm your prizes of a Pentax 17 t-shirt, some Kodak films and a copy of your winning print(s) 🎉

A quirky garden display with a gorilla statue wearing a “The Wife” sign surrounded by polar bear figures and flowers, shot by Warren Bates on Kodak 35mm film in Runcorn

Third Place: Photo by Warren Bates, taken on a 35mm Kodak film (not specified which one, but we assume Pro Image) in Runcorn. Favourite thing about the event: "Meeting fellow film photographers."

This image caught Antonio’s eye because: “He did an impressive job at capturing something ordinary and making it extraordinary. What I saw in this image was the paradox of the wife with the chain on the neck of the gorilla and the offspring which are not gorillas, they’re polar bears. There’s contrasting elements, but also matching colours with the sign and the sunflowers. It’s a messy environment but Warren created order through the image. The bars give an insight into a situation such as a zoo and constricted animals. It’s a great storytelling example from Warren.”

A white lorry with a red base transports a blue Ford tractor, with a child resting inside the cab, shot by Kristian Brice on Kodak Pro Image 35mm film in Belfast.

Second Place: Photo by Kristian Brice, taken on Kodak Pro Image 35mm film in Belfast. Favourite thing about the event: "Super welcoming and friendly. Enjoyed exploring places I had no clue about where I live."

For the second place image, Antonio said: “There’s a driver - who’s arm you see - then a kid sitting at the front. The overall image is a rural, industrial image with strong colours but not too oversaturated. Kristian has captured the very fleeting moment that’s happened in front of him. He’s photographed something with RGB - red, green and blue. The tractor at the back doesn’t look modern. With film you try to slow down and capture something that is timeless. This image is quite modern but gives a timeless feel. But what I see is the kid driving the truck, almost like looking at a kid who is driving the future (like with analogue photography). Kristian is deliberate with this image and his eyes were sharp enough to understand the surroundings.”

Two people stand by a gated alley with red warning signs while an older man sits in a wheelchair nearby, shot by Kristian Brice on Kodak Pro Image 35mm film in Belfast

Honourable Mention: Photo by Kristian Brice, taken on  Kodak Pro Image 35mm film in Belfast.

The Winner!

Congratulations to Donald Ingram for his winning entry! 🥇 I instantly recognised this scene and knew where it was before looking at the location. Victoria Street in Edinburgh is packed with colour and personality - and Donald captured the hustle and bustle beautifully, and from a particularly unique perspective.

A layered reflection of colorful buildings and Harry Potter signage in a shop window, shot by Donald Ingram on Kodak Pro Image 35mm film in Edinburgh, Scotland

First Place: Photo by Donald Ingram, taken on Kodak Pro Image 35mm film in Edinburgh. Favourite thing about the event: "Thanks for organising, I enjoyed meeting everyone and chatting. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone’s images."

On why this was picked as his winner, Antonio said: “Donald really thought out what he was capturing. The image tells you a story, yet it's really cryptic. It’s a repeating reflection. But what impressed me was how he captured layers through a simple reflection. You see on the left hand side a painting of someone yelling, on the right hand side there’s colourful and repeating patterns of the windows, but on the top there’s a very old building with some interesting writing. Different aspects of the same reality. Your eyes will never be bored by an image like this as there’s so many layers but it makes sense - it represents society, there are so many different aspects and layers of society. There’s a nice contrast between the bottom and the top of the image with the bright colours and old writing. There’s contrasts between colours and texture and different layers where you can read between the lines what the photographer was trying to capture.”

Of the selected images, it’s worth highlighting why they stood out for Antonio: “This is a nice initiative from Analogue Wonderland. A competition is a good exercise to understand where you stand in terms of photography skills and overall research. You are always trying to create something interesting that has not been seen before, or creating another narrative. When you’re holding that camera, especially with film, you can create something unique that can have an impact on the viewer and be really important for society at large. In this case, all these three winners didn't focus just on a stylistic aspect of an image or the colours or the bokeh, they dared a little bit more with aspects like reflection or a lifeless setup or the intentional framing. It’s the capacity of a photographer to interpret a different scene that comes into play here - be quick, use the decisive moment, use your instinct, and master technique.”

Once again, well done Donald! We’ll be in touch by email to confirm your prizes: a Pentax 17 camera, a Pentax 17 T-shirt, a bundle of Kodak films, and a copy of your winning print. Side note: If you're keen to get your hands on a Pentax 17 camera for yourself, we've got an incredible deal running until 10th October 2025, where you can bag £100 worth of free 35mm film when you buy the Pentax 17 👀

A huge thank you to everyone who both attended our second Big Film Photowalk and entered the photo competition. We’ve loved seeing your unique interpretations of different scenes across the UK. Here’s to more creativity, more community, and an even bigger celebration of analogue next year!
