Kentmere 200 - its a bargain

This film nearly hits the levels set by Ilford's FP4+ IMO. Maybe not quite as contrasty but this could be the way I developed it. With time I'm certain I'll find its' sweet spot. Overall I would recommend all black and white image creators to try it. At this price it is a great film.

How could you not shoot it for the price?

At such an affordable price I would recommend anyone to give Kentmere 200 a go. I took it on a recent trip to the Shetland Islands to test out an old point and shoot that I hadn't used in years. I was pleasantly surprised to discover than not only did the camera still work, but I was really pleased with the shots too. I personally love the gritty look provided by the contrast and grain. I've just ordered some more as I think it punches well above its price point.

Kentmere 200 - a new everyday film, or more?

'There's nothing new under sun' so the saying goes so I was interested in why Harman Technology have released a new film. 200 ISO is a useful film speed halfway between their existing 100 and 400 offerings, both of which I've used and like, although not enough to switch from FP4+ and HP5+ for general shooting. According to the makers blurb and other online commenters it's fine(ish) grain and quite high contrast. The only way to know whether it works for me though is to test it. I put a couple of 24 exposure rolls through my Olympus OM2n on a recent trip to Suffolk. The only lens I used was my 50mm F3.5 Macro as I'd left the others at home by mistake! The weather was 'typical British summer' so a wide range of lighting conditions from overcast to bright sunshine. I only ever make darkroom prints so the film was developed with that in mind. I used bog-standard ID11 diluted at 1:1 at 20 DegC for the recommended 8 minutes, 45 seconds. The negatives printed beautifully on Ilford Multigrade deLuxe at Grade 2.5. So, what is my verdict: Firstly, it's sharp and the grain is reasonable for a 200iso film. Secondly, it does have an inherently high contrast. In bright sun it struggled to hold highlights and shadows over a 7-stop range. That said, the higher contrast rendered softer scenes beautifully. The big question for me is whether I'd want to use it regularly. The high contrast is both a blessing and a curse. I've got a couple more rolls to try which I'll develop in Pyrocat-HD once I've worked out a developing time. My resounding answer is 'YES', but not in all circumstances.
